Stage 1

Marisa	I panicked when black water started gushing out here and there,
Marisa	but this area doesn't seem to be affected by the stuff.
Marisa	Guess that means the source isn't in the forest...
Marisa	Oh, if it isn't Reimu! What's up?
Reimu	I decided to go underground to find out where the water's coming from.
Marisa	I knew it. I thought you'd think to do that.
Reimu	I heard that the Forest of Magic had an entrance to an underground cavern that hadn't been blocked by the black water.
Reimu	You would know where that is, wouldn't you?
Marisa	Actually, I was just aboutta head down there and investigate myself.
Marisa	I know. How 'bout the winner gets to go investigate first?
Reimu	Good idea. I'm sure I'm gonna have to fight in flooded places anyways,
Reimu	So you'll be the perfect practice for a fight!
Marisa	It may come as a surprise, but I'm used to handling water.
Marisa	Too bad for you! I'll be the one that goes to the underground cavern first!

Yuugi	That's not sulfur you're smelling, Miss Marisa.
Marisa	'Ey, it's Yuugi.
Yuugi	You above-grounders get the wrong idea about this a lot, but sulfur's not what gives hot springs their smell.
Marisa	Really?
Yuugi	It's the smell of the vengeful spirits' grudges, y'see.
Yuugi	Sulfur is actually odorless. You'd better remember that!

Marisa	I'm actually here t'see about some stinky black water that smells different from this...
Yuugi	...I see, so it's gushing up above ground.

Yuugi	That water comes from a zone that's considered untouchable, even by Former Hell standards.
Yuugi	It's an utterly cursed liquid.
Yuugi	They say that if you're careful with how you use it, it can bring you great wealth...
Yuugi	But it's also said that those who obtain it are guaranteed to meet with misfortune.
Yuugi	What'd they call it in the human world, again...?
Yuugi	They wrote it as "stone oil"... "Petroleum," I think it was called.
Marisa	Yeah, I've heard of it.
Yuugi	I've got no clue as to why it's gushing out onto the surface, though.
Marisa	A'ight, sorry to bother you. Now, I'd like to take a dip in the hot spring...
Marisa	But investigatin' the petroleum comes first.
Yuugi	Hang on a sec. You're going off to investigate it?
Marisa	'Course I am! The hot springs come after that!
Yuugi	You'd better not. Digging any deeper than the city area is dangerous.
Yuugi	Not just for you, but for all of Former Hell!

Marisa	Is this... that underground fusion reactor that Kanako's in charge of?
Marisa	Sure is cold, though... I'm pretty sure this place was supposed t' be super hot.
Marisa	And it's flooded, to boot. What on Earth...?
Minamitsu	Move, move, MOVE! What are you standing in the way for?!
Marisa	What the?! Which one of us d'you think is in harm's way, here?!
Minamitsu	Every second counts in this situation! The reactor's fire isn't gonna be extinguished for long!
Marisa	Can't you even apologize, ya jackass...?
Marisa	Being in a hurry isn't a get-out-of-jail-free card, ya know!
Marisa	Time to teach you some manners!

Marisa	I wanna reach the deepest level of the underground so I can investigate the petroleum... er, the black water.
Marisa	And apparently, this is the one an' only place that connects to the deepest level.
Minamitsu	Ah, so that was it after all.
Minamitsu	No reason for me to keep you here any longer, then.
Minamitsu	I'm actually here to investigate the same thing.
Marisa	Didn't you say you were short on time a minute ago...?
Minamitsu	Well, you have to go through the Hell of Blazing Fires to reach the deepest level...
Minamitsu	But it's too hot to even do that right now.
Minamitsu	So we opened a hole in the bottom of the Sanzu River to flood the reactor and put the fire out.
Minamitsu	Once the Hell of Blazing Fires is cold enough, I can reach the deepest level safely.
Marisa	Gotcha, gotcha.
Marisa	Welp, sorry to do this when you were clearly way more prepared than I am...
Marisa	But I'll be usin' that path for myself, thanks!

Stage 5

Marisa	...specifically BECAUSE of all this water floodin' the caves?
Kutaka	Seems like we have another big job on our hands...
Kutaka	It's more of a Sanzu Waterfall than a Sanzu River at this point.
Marisa	Hm, you're... that bird, right?
Kutaka	Kutaka Niwatari, yes. It's been a while, Miss Marisa.
Kutaka	This wouldn't happen to be your doing, would it? Opening a hole in the Sanzu riverbed, of all things?
Marisa	Huh? No, you've got the wrong idea...
Kutaka	The Sanzu River is the sole boundary that separates the mortal world from the afterlife.
Kutaka	Are you trying to take advantage of that to reach Hell?
Kutaka	Was all that business in the Animal Realm just camouflage?
Kutaka	That must be it! I knew you were a dangerous individual. I did get the feeling that was the case.

Kutaka	I see... I'm not particularly well-informed about this 'black water' myself,
Kutaka	but I sense no malicious intent from you.
Kutaka	However, the place below here is where all of Hell's malice has settled to the bottom.
Kutaka	It's a hopeless place, worthy of being called a true Hell.
